Info

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Often called "the gentle art," its core principle is that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a larger, stronger opponent by using leverage and technique to take the fight to the ground and apply submission holds.

Key Concepts

Leverage and Technique over Strength - BJJ prioritizes using proper body mechanics and strategy rather than relying on brute force.

Ground Fighting - Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ is primarily a ground-based discipline. Practitioners learn how to control their opponents on the mat from various dominant positions.

Position Before Submission - This is a key mantra in BJJ. It emphasizes the importance of securing a dominant position (like side control or the mount) to control the opponent before attempting to finish the fight with a submission hold.

Submission Holds - The ultimate goal is to force an opponent to "tap out" (concede defeat) using joint locks (like an armbar) or chokeholds (like a rear-naked choke).

History

BJJ's roots can be traced to early 20th-century Brazil, where Japanese judoka Mitsuyo Maeda taught Kodokan Judo to Carlos Gracie. Carlos then passed on the knowledge to his brothers, most notably Hélio Gracie. Hélio, who was physically frail, modified the techniques to be more effective for a smaller person, focusing on leverage and ground fighting. This adaptation led to the creation of what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Gracie family further refined and popularized the art through "vale-tudo" (anything goes) challenge matches and, later, the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where BJJ proved its effectiveness against other martial arts.
